Magic Thursday--Excerpt of Dead Lady Vanishing

Tash and Joe are back! Mystery, humor and romance combine when they investigate the ghostly goings-on at spooky Wildfinch Hall.

Dead Lady Vanishing is Book 2 in the Bolde and Baulsey paranormal mystery series. Here’s a sneak peak:

***

My flashlight illuminated the name Wildfinch Hall. Really? Somebody had been reading too many Brontë novels. And we weren’t even in Yorkshire. I wondered whether Heathcliff was at home.
“Stop messing around,” yelled Clover. She was already on the other side of the gates. Unlike me, she could walk right through them. “Come on.”
“The gates are locked,” I said, directing my beam onto the padlock and chain.
“Then climb over.”
It wasn’t the first time I’d trespassed at Clover’s insistence and I guessed it wouldn’t be the last. Sticking the flashlight in my pocket, I surveyed the curls and scrolls of wrought iron, which appeared to provide plenty of hand- and footholds. It wasn’t until I grabbed hold that I realized the metal was dangerously slick with rain. I slipped and banged my knee. Sucking in a breath, I tried again, more carefully this time. As I made my way up, the gates wobbled. The wind whipped around, threatening to toss me on my ass, but I clung on. When I reached the top, I swung one leg over and then the other. For a second I balanced on top then I jumped down, landing with a crunch on the gravel driveway.
Jagged lightning split the sky. For a moment it was bright as day. A large building—we’re talking Pemberley or Downton Abbey—stood on the crest of the hill at the end of the driveway. The scream must’ve come from there.
As I started toward it, Clover called, “No, this way,” and set off across a wide lawn dotted with swaying trees.
Forgetting about the pelting rain, my wet shoes, and the chill that turned my breath misty white, I went after her, flicking on my flashlight again as I ran.
“Is the woman still screaming?” I panted.
“No.” She sounded worried.
“Maybe you’ve gone the wrong way. The scream must’ve come from the place on the hill.”
“It didn’t.” She continued to move away from the house.
“You do realize I’m soaking wet,” I grumbled. Honestly I wished I’d stayed in the cramped car. At least that had been warm and dry. But Clover wasn’t sympathetic. Probably because, no matter how hard it rained, she was bone-dry. One of the advantages of being a ghost.
I stepped in a puddle halfway up my shin and swore loudly. Mud squelched as I pulled myself free. Clover had gone on ahead. I trudged after her.
Suddenly she yelled and pointed, “Over there. Near the wood. It’s some sort of building.” She moved fast, gliding over the grass. I hurried after her.
The building had been constructed in the style of a mini Roman temple with stone walls on three sides. On the fourth side a short flight of steps led to a porch with a roof supported by columns. By the time I reached the steps, Clover was moving across the porch toward a wooden door. She could easily have passed right through it, but she suddenly stopped and took a step back. Had she met some kind of resistance? I moved closer so I could hear what she was saying.
“What the—?” She squared her shoulders. Then, raising her voice above the storm as though she was speaking to someone, she said, “Who are you? Why did you scream?”
As she listened to the answer, she tapped her foot like she did when she was pissed. “I’ll mind my own business when hell freezes over! Who the hell do you think you are anyway?”
Frustrated that I could only witness one side of their exchange, I yelled, “Clover, what’s going on?”
But all her attention was on the other ghost. She looked it over from head to toe. “You’ve been here a while, haven’t you? When did you die? Nineteenth century?...No, I won’t go away. I heard a scream. Was it you?” Her hands rested on her plump hips, feet apart, in the determined stance I knew so well. She clenched her fists and demanded, “Get out of my way.” A second later, she doubled over. Had she’d been gut-punched?
“Clover!” I rushed up the steps.
“Stay back,” she warned, but I kept going. Her assailant was a ghost. It couldn’t hurt me. Not physically anyway.
I'd almost reached her when her head snapped back. Had she been punched in the jaw? She lashed out, one-two, with her fists. Then suddenly her hands were pinned behind her and she was being pushed toward the door.
“Let her go!” I launched myself at whoever was holding her and swung a punch. I’d never fought a ghost before. I was shocked when my fist sank into something thick, viscous, and bitterly cold. I yelped as the icy sensation crept up my arms and entered my chest. It was hard to breathe. For one terrifying moment, I heard the faraway sound of a woman screaming in torment.
Clover struggled to escape whoever had pinned her arms behind her. She yelled, “You have no right to—” Her voice was abruptly cut off as though someone had her around the throat. I wanted to help, but the icy cold that had settled in my chest moved up through my neck and into my skull. I’d had brain freeze before but this was much worse. I fell to my knees, cradling my head in my hands, moaning. What was happening to me? I couldn’t think straight, could hardly move. I huddled in a pathetic mound, willing the pain to go away.
“Tash!”
Clover was in trouble…I had to help her…somehow. With a huge effort I managed to raise my head. I saw her throw a punch then suddenly she was down on her knees, her back arched, head bent way back. Her bright blue eyes locked on mine. I heard her panted breaths, saw her struggling to defeat her opponent, but she couldn’t do it alone.
“Tash! Help me!”
I was on my knees, ice-cold, shivering. My head ached like a thousand knives were stabbing my skull. I could barely move, but somehow I had to help her. Slowly, terribly slowly, I forced myself to move, straightening my back, moving one leg into a half-kneeling position. Then, with a supreme effort, I pushed myself upward. Ignoring my pounding, throbbing head, I launched myself at Clover, twisting a little at the last moment, hoping I’d knock down her assailant. It was like hitting a wall of ice. I staggered backward, lost my footing on the edge of the porch, and tumbled down the steps onto the wet grass. Rain poured onto my face, making me cough and splutter. Groggy and disoriented, I rolled onto my hands and knees.
Clover called out to me again, but her voice sounded faint and very far away. I struggled to make out the words, but all I heard was a name. “Rosalind… ” Then suddenly my head cleared, just like that, and I was no longer in pain. I leaped to my feet. Scooping up the flashlight I’d dropped, I raked the beam over the place where I’d last seen her. All I saw was the little Roman temple looking dismal and forlorn in the sheeting rain. Clover was gone.

Enchanted Orb with S. E. Gilchrist

Enchanted Orb with S. E. Gilchrist

The year I decided to treat my writing hobby seriously, I had the usual dreams – of seeing my books on shelves, receiving lovely fat advances from big name publishers and giving up my day job to write full time.

But I was also beset with doubts; doubts of my ability to first, finish a book and second, receive that heart pounding call. Then once I was published a new set of doubts hit me; what if no one likes my book, what if no one buys my book and (shudder) what if I receive awful reviews?

Well, I’ve had my share of both good and bad reviews. I have yet to see a print book on the shelf and I now base my dreams on the reality of being an Australian writer in today’s world. It’s not easy, it’s hard to make a living and you have to work hard if you want to achieve the success you crave. I’ve learned everyone’s path is different and what will work for one writer may not work for me. I’ve grown a thicker skin, learned to treat my writing as a business – you can’t please everyone. I do read my reviews however with a critical eye and think about what the reader has said and whether and how I should improve the next story.

Fear can cripple you, hold you back, keep you in what you think is a safe comfortable place and we all doubt ourselves at different stages in our lives. So if you’re holding back on submitting that first book to a publisher, holding back on entering contests, holding back on going to a conference or joining a writing group, focus on your dreams and take that first step. You never know where that  one step will lead you.

Latest release:

My latest release is Cosmic Fire, episode two in my Mars Academy series. The series is based around the need of the Earth Republic to find and claim another earth-like planet. In the story line, Mars has long been colonized and remains under the Earth Republic’s control, however, there is an underground movement of revolutionaries who want an independent Mars. On the exploratory space ship, I have a crew made up of people from both the Earth Republic and also Mars, some of whom are part of the revolutionaries. And also on board is a secret group of saboteurs. I’ve thrown in romance, action, adventure and a touch of suspense – all my favourite ingredients.

Hopefully, readers will also enjoy the series.

For more about me visit my website.

Enchanted Orb with Claire Boston

For Enchanted Orb this week, Claire Boston is sharing a day in her writing life. Welcome Claire...

A day in the writing life of Claire Boston

My writing life has changed A LOT in the last six months. In September last year I was working full-time in a job that I’d been in for ten years. I got up at 5.15am every morning to get an hour of writing in before work and I would spend every second Friday writing all day (I worked a 9-day fortnight). Usually I tried to get a few hours of writing done on the weekend as well. I had one book published and another with my publisher and was wondering how I could possibly write fast enough to get a third book written by the end of the year.

Then I was called in to my manager’s office one day and given the news, “Your position is being made redundant.” As the surprise washed over me, I listened while he outlined the redundancy package and then said goodbye to my colleagues, packed up my things and went home.

I immediately saw an opportunity. I no longer had a full-time job, but the payout was enough that I didn’t have to race out and find a new one. I could write full-time for the rest of the year at least. I discussed it with my husband and we both decided that I wasn’t likely to get another chance like this. We decided I would write until the money ran out.

So grasping the chance I began book 3 of The Texan Quartet, wrote a dirty draft and then started on book 4. For me it’s the first draft that takes the longest. After it’s written, it’s much easier to edit in one hour blocks if necessary, so I wanted to get the drafts done while I had the time.

It didn’t take long to work out a routine. I still get up early – 5.30am to be precise. My husband and I hit the gym for an hour or so and then I get to my desk by 8.00am. I’ll write or edit until midday, take a break for lunch and then keep writing. Depending on my weekly work plan, I might stop mid-afternoon to work on marketing or some other aspect of the business. By that time my brain has been pretty much leached of all its creativity and I need to do something else.

It’s been an incredible shift of focus for me and I feel so lucky to have this chance. In the six months I’ve been writing full-time I’ve written two books, received a three book contract, done copyedits for a book, started a blog and done a lot of business training. My latest novel, All That Sparkles, is being released on 23 April. You can pre-order it here http://momentumbooks.com.au/books/all-that-sparkles-the-texan-quartet/

Claire Boston is on a blog tour all of April:

About Claire:

Claire Boston was a voracious reader as a child, devouring anything by Enid Blyton as well as series such as Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, The Baby-sitters Club and Sweet Valley High. Then one school holidays when she’d run out of books to read, her mum handed her ‘Hot Ice’ by Nora Roberts and she instantly fell in love with romance novels.

The love of reading soon turned to a love of writing and Claire struggled to keep within the 1500 word limit set by her teachers for any creative writing assignments. When she finally decided to become serious about her stories, she joined Romance Writers of Australia, found her wonderful critique group and hasn’t looked back.

When Claire’s not reading or writing she can be found in the garden attempting to grow vegetables, or racing around a vintage motocross track. If she can convince anyone to play with her, she also enjoys cards and board games.

Claire lives in Western Australia, just south of Perth, with her husband, who loves even her most annoying quirks, and her grubby, but adorable Australian bulldog.

Enchanted Orb with Nicole Murphy

Writers find inspiration in the strangest and most interesting ways. Today we have multi-genre writing author, Nicole Murphy sharing with us the inspiration behind her latest flood of books.

Over to Nicole...

I’m in the middle of a busy twelve months. Four books coming out. FOUR! Since one of them is a collection of four novellas, that’s actually a total of seven stories. And while the novellas and the three other books are linked, they’re also all very different. So what’s my inspiration for them all?

Release is the title of the collection of paranormal erotic novellas. Not only is it a great name for a collection of erotica, it also in one word sums up the overarching story. Four spirits, trying to find release from the eternal punishment they’ve been given for their earthly sins. The idea to link them all together came during the writing process. The first novella was written a couple of years ago, and I was having problems selling it. Then came the idea for a second novella, that would also be about a spirit. From there, I developed all four spirits – the spirit of the house, the spirit of the beach, the spirit of the field and the spirit of the office – and started to write the other three stories. As they developed, it was the last story – the spirit of the office – that made me realise how linked the four stories were.

The final story is really different to the other three, in that this time it isn’t the spirit who needs to help and heal a woman, but the woman who needs to help and heal the spirit. I had to think about why the spirit was in this situation, who he was, and why it had to happen. From that came the link that I think took the collection from four erotica stories to something really open and honest and heartfelt.

The other three books are a science fiction romance trilogy, called the Jorda series. The inspiration for the first book, Loving the Prince, goes back 30 years. Yep, count em – thirty. I was in Year 9 at high school when I first conceived of Cassandra, her family, her love interest and her world. The inspiration – one Princess Leia Organa, from Star Wars. I wanted to write a kick-arse space princess too.

Cassandra’s changed a lot over the years, and so has the story. The big issue I had was finding the right story for her – I started and discarded a lot over the year. She started out almost Luke Skywalker-ish in her desire to dash in and have an adventure. She still has that tendency, but now it’s the aspect that gets her into trouble and it’s up to her lover, Kernan, to try and keep her chilled, before she destroys everything.

I’d always thought that Cassandra’s twin sister, Diana, would be the heroine of her own story, but the real moment Diana came to life was when I was at some markets at the end of last year, and someone was selling this beautiful hand-made jewelry. They’d learnt to smelt and mould silver and the works were unique and fascinating and it came to me – that’s what Diana needed. A passion that would drive her as much as Cassandra’s dedication to work and family drove her, and that passion would be jewelry making.

The third book in the trilogy will conclude the storyline begun in Cassandra’s book, and made horrible and heinous in Diana’s. It features a heroine that up until January 6 this year was never going to be the heroine of a book. But then I was talking to my publisher, and she said ‘You know whose book would be great? Plissa’s…’ and I said ‘Ooooh, interesting’ and my fate was sealed.

Plissa Waltric was supposed to be nothing but Cassandra’s nemesis. In fact, originally she was a he – Grant Waltric. Honestly I just changed the name, the ‘he’s to ‘she’s, polished a few things and Grant became Plissa. But my publisher was right – she was fascinating, and I loved the challenge of making someone like her, who comes across in the first book as just awful, as the heroine in a romance.

So that was my inspiration for the last book – the challenge of making it work. And it’s turning out to be a hard book to write, but an interesting one and I’m having a ball.

So there you have it – inspiration can come from all directions. It can come from your writing itself. It can come from your favourite movie. It can come from a visit to the markets (which also gives you the PERFECT excuse to go shopping often – it’s for research, darling) and it can come from a challenge. You never know when inspiration will strike, and that’s what makes this job so much fun!

Enchanted Orb with Marie Dry

On Enchanted Orb, we love to learn more about how a writer found their inspiration for either a story, the characters or even the inspiration behind the life of being a writer. Today we have Marie Dry joining us with a post about how she came up with her book, Alien Mine. (Release date 21st June 2014.)

Welcome, Marie.

My inspiration for Alien Mine came when I saw the Predator movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The alien had this skull in his hands that he stroked with an admiring finger. I thought what if there was an alien that wasn’t so ugly. That saw an earth women and admired her and decided to keep her. An alien that would still be ruthless, bent on conquering but has the capacity to learn to love the heroine in spite of their differences.

I saw this scene where the heroine hit him over the head with a club and the characters fell into place for me. I knew exactly what the setting would be. Dystopian worlds have always fascinated me. The one element that always fascinated me was at what point does a civilization realize they are collapsing. Many people still believed they were part of the Roman Empire long after it fell. With that question in my mind my setting fell into place as well.

I loved working on this book and hope anyone who read it have the same enjoyment.

BLURB: ALIEN MINE He wants to conquer…
In a bleak future where government systems are breaking down and lawless bands of men terrorize the country, Natalie, a botanist, lives alone in a cave in the Rocky Mountains for safety. When she is captured by raiders, a fierce striking alien appears and slays her attackers. Natalie is now held captive in her own cave by the alien, Zacar, who informs her, that she will be his breeder. Natalie soon realize these aliens worship strength. What will she do when he finds out she has severe asthma?

Excerpt Alien Mine © Marie Dry 2014

She had to get away from the aliens, but running down a mountain in the snow and freezing temperature probably wasn’t the best idea either…

Her muscles ached and her hands felt like frozen claws, even with her gloves, as she tried to grip the rocks and pull herself up the slope. In spite of her need to hurry, she stopped every now and then to scan the area behind her for aliens.

Tired and cold, fed up with constantly feeling afraid, she wanted to just lie down under a tree and forget about everything. Forget that aliens had landed on her mountain. Forget that Zacar was probably hunting her.

Maybe being a breeder wouldn’t be that bad.

A shiver snaked through her at the thought, spurring her on. She tried to pull herself up by holding onto a bush, but she couldn’t feel the branch. Her hand was too numb and weak and it kept slipping from her grasp.

Her feet were cold, and her mind had trouble commanding them to move, to climb. She knew she was risking developing frostbite, but she continued to move on, sluggish and cold. She had to get to town. She just had to.

She fought the nagging desire to lie down on the soft snow and go to sleep.

Just another half an hour and you can rest, Natalie.

Even her own thoughts were starting to sound strange, slurry. She lifted her tired arm in slow motion and gripped the rock above her.

Her glove made contact with something. Even with her numb fingers, it didn’t feel like a rock or a bush.

Confused, she lifted her head, and stared up into Zacar’s frighteningly emotionless face.

Enchanted Orb with Anna Hackett

Welcome to another Enchanted Orb with Anna Hackett who shares with us the inspiration behind her latest release, At Star's End and her love of action, adventure and romance.

During a dreary vacation in Scotland, a man named Robert Louis Stevenson painted a map to help pass the time. Looking at his creation, he suddenly had an image of a band of pirates. Stevenson recalled, “They passed to and fro, fighting and hunting treasure, on these few square inches of a flat projection.” He set down the paintbrush and started to write…the result, Treasure Island.

Well, the inspiration for my latest book, At Star's End, wasn’t a map but it does involve treasure and treasure hunters. In space.

When I sat down to write the first book in my new series, THE PHOENIX ADVENTURES, I had a burning desire to write a non-stop, action-packed romp across the galaxy after fantastic treasure.

Here are all the inspiration ingredients that went into At Star's End.

Action: everyday life is often missing action, or at least action of the thrilling, inspiring variety. Shopping, cooking, changing nappies, wiping grimy hands, heading to work…that’s not the kind of action that leaves the heart pounding. I want chases, explosions, spaceships…things that leave me breathless.

Adventure: I love ancient history (I’ve visited Egypt twice). I love to read about adventurers and explorers of centuries past discovering the treasures we now marvel at in museums. It just isn’t possible to have adventures like that anymore and that inspired my galactic treasure hunter and astro-archaeologist who race to find the last remaining fragment of the Mona Lisa.

Romance: yes, I love action and adventure but isn’t the biggest adventure of all falling in love? I love to see the boy win the girl (and of course have to earn it). All my stories have to have romance. What I love most about action-filled romance is that the action puts the characters in crazy, terrible, trying circumstances. It strips them back to who they really are, shows us what they are really made of, and isn’t that the best time to see them take the leap into love?

Treasure: I loved the idea of exploring what it would be like far into the future, with archaeologists looking back at the remnants of our world. I knew straight away what fabulous treasure my hero and heroine would be chasing—the world’s most famous painting (or what’s left of it in the distant future), the Mona Lisa.

So there you go. Add a cup of action, a large dash of adventure, sprinkle liberally with romance and add a spoonful of treasure and you have At Star's End!

BLURB:
Dr. Eos Rai has spent a lifetime dedicated to her mother’s dream of finding the long lost Mona Lisa. When Eos uncovers tantalizing evidence of Star’s End—the last known location of the masterpiece—she’s shocked when her employer, the Galactic Institute of Historic Preservation, turn its back on her. Left with no choice, Eos must trust the most notorious treasure hunter in the galaxy; a man she finds infuriating, annoying and far too tempting.

Dathan Phoenix can sniff out relics at a stellar mile. With his brothers by his side, he takes the adventures that suit him and refuses to become a lazy, bitter failure like his father. When the gorgeous Eos Rai comes looking to hire him, he knows she’s trouble, but he’s lured into a hunt that turns into a wild and dangerous adventure. As Eos and Dathan are pushed to their limits, they discover treasure isn’t the only thing they’re drawn to…but how will their desire survive when Dathan demands the Mona Lisa as his payment?

About Anna

I'm Anna Hackett and I write action romance stories to thrill you, excite you and leave you inspired. I write about people overcoming unbeatable odds and achieving seemingly impossible goals to inspire you with the truth that the possibility exists for all of us to do the same. I love hearing from fellow action romance lovers! www.annahackettbooks.com

A Bite Of... Forget Me Not

This fortnight, it is my pleasure to welcome Stacey Nash, with a bite of her latest release, Forget Me Not.

Can you, in less than five words describe your book/story Forget Me Not?
Adventure, intrigue, action, romance, technology

Who is your favourite character in this book?

The love interest, Jax. He’s a smart mouthed teen with a bit of attitude, and a lot of secrets. I always pictured him as a teenage Chase Crawford.

What inspired you to write it?
I’ve always been fascinated by conspiracy theories and Forget Me Not is like a whole bunch of them rolled in together with a science fiction and secret society explanation.

And here's the snippet!
“I’ve got a couple of youngsters in need of your help,” Al says to the back of a tattered, old armchair. Light blue fabric peeks out between numerous patches.

The chair spins on its base, and a man whose skin matches his milk chocolate eyes scans me. He wears long shorts which dangle over his bent knees and an oversized yellow, green, and red striped shirt. They’re paired with sandals and a knitted, striped beanie. He offers his hand in greeting. “Beau Fairsmith’s the name.”

I wait a moment too long before shaking his hand. He’s such a contradictory ensemble, I’m lost for words. “Ah…” I finally say. “Anamae Gilbert and William Avery.”

The blond newsreader’s voice changes tone, and my attention darts to the ancient television in the corner. “A tragedy occurred today when a man in his early thirties plummeted from the top of an office building to his death. Details on hand are sketchy, but police have issued these surveillance pictures showing a young man and woman at the scene. Anyone with information regarding these two suspects should notify the police immediately. The suspects should not be approached, as they are considered armed and dangerous.”

A pencil sketch of a moonlike face with round eyes and a small dimple just off-center of the left cheek pops up on the screen. Oh my God, it’s Will. There’s no mistaking it. A phone number flashes underneath, and an uncanny likeness of me follows.

My mouth forms the shape to exclaim ‘what,’ but the word stalls on my lips. Someone’s dead, and they think we did it. The guy who attacked me, did they find his body? Surely they couldn’t link him to me, and Will wasn’t even there. It doesn’t make any sense.

“Ya got him!” Al claps me on the shoulder, and I blink at him.

Will’s brows knit together. The same look he gets when he’s put an engine back together and there’s a part left over.

“We didn’t kill anyone. He came after me, he tried to hurt me. We weren’t even near an office building.” I can hear the crack in my voice and know I’m verging on hysterical. Breathe, Mae, breathe.

Beau points a chunky remote at the television, and it fades to a black screen. “Ahh, I bet you two have something not quite normal. Perhaps odd things happen when you use it in a certain way. The sort of thing some people might call magic.” The end of his sentence raises like it’s a question. He looks at us with expectant, wide eyes.

My hand darts to the pendant under my shirt and pins it to my chest. I exchange a troubled glance with Will.

“Magic? Yeah, maybe,” he says.

“They have a cover-up. Dimwits used it twice in broad daylight and brought themselves to the attention of The Collective.” Al rubs his brow.

Beau pulls himself up out of the old armchair, suddenly more alert. “The Collective will sacrifice everything to ensure this type of knowledge is not in the hands of the public. You are incredibly lucky or clever to be unharmed.”

The Collective. That’s what Al said, too. I glance at Will sideways. His mouth hangs slightly open, his eyes wide. He looks as astonished as I feel. Beau’s gaze shifts beyond me, and his face lights up in a smile. When I look over my shoulder, I see Bertie standing in the doorway, waving. She smiles and continues past the room; obviously she and Al are well known around here.

“When tech is used, an alarm is activated, alerting The Collective,” Beau continues. “If the use is unauthorized, they send a scout to appropriate the tech and contain any knowledge of its existence.”

The man in the East Coast Gas uniform, he must have been a scout.

“What do you mean?” Will asks.

Beau rubs his forehead. “Technology, tools, machines, items which perform a specific function. Some tech is common, like cellphones, computers, and satellite tracking, but other tech is not known or used at all. The Collective works hard to keep its knowledge hidden from the general population.”

I shake my head. “I should have known it wasn’t magic.”

The blue flower on the pendant made me appear invisible. Not magic, but technology. My hand still clutches it protectively. How does it work? It has to be some trick with light. I’ve always hated science; I spend most of class daydreaming of being outside with Will and my camera, soaking up his contagious happiness.

Beau’s voice breaks my thoughts. “We also have an alarm. We use it to intercept Collective agents and stop them from harming innocent people. The radar pinpoints the location of the use of tech.”

The boy, the one in the leather jacket. My gaze darts back to the window and the tree branches reaching over the lawn, but I can’t see him. He must have been sent to intercept the gas man.

“This is a safe house. The Collective can’t reach it. You’ll have to stay here while we secure your safety,” Beau says.

“A safe house?” Will asks.

My mind spins again. It’s doing a lot of that this afternoon. There’s so much to take in. This morning we played a dumb game, and now we’re here in the middle of ‘great danger’.

“There are several of them across the country, and each house has a number of people. We will give you assistance.”

My mind whirls. Scouts, collective, safe houses. It’s too much to take in. I move toward an armchair identical to Beau’s, place my hands on its soft, well-worn arms, and sink into it.

“I can’t stay here. My dad, I need to go home to him,” I say. “After Mom, he won’t cope if I disappear, too. He -- he needs me. He doesn’t even have his mother anymore.” I hang my head in my hands, twining my fingers into my hair. He’s balanced so close to the edge of despair, and I won’t push him over.

“They’re relentless. They won’t give up until they find you,” Al says. He’s still here. I’d almost forgotten him. “It’s not safe. You can’t outrun them forever. Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on your old man.”

Will’s already rigid stance stiffens further. “What do you mean ‘not safe’?”

“Mae is a threat to the secret knowledge of advanced technology,” Al says, “and The Collective eliminates their threats.”
