Magic Thursday with DJ Michaels and her Sexy Dragon Riders: Enforcer's Craving

Please welcome Dark Sider DJ Michaels to help celebrate her debut release, Enforcer's Craving, which is out now with Ellora's Cave! Congratulations, DJ! Please tell us a little about your book.

Enforcer’s Craving is my first foray into erotic romance – and I went the whole hog by making it a ménage! It’s classed as sci-fi (because the action occurs on a planet far far away) but there are strong fantasy elements in the story. The world in which our heroine finds herself is free of technology and our heroes are warrior dragon riders. But don’t let that trick you into thinking they are backward in any way. These boys are sophisticated and sexy (at least, I think they are anyway).

A Romantica® futuristic ménage erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Excerpt:

The thick forest stopped all of a sudden, as if a giant had sliced it with a knife and scraped away the excess. Between one step and the next Chelsea was out of the greenery and standing on fine white sand with the sun glaring down on her head and shoulders. The beach stretched as far as she could see in either direction, and it was a good fifty meters from where she stood down to the dark blue lake.

But the beautiful scenery was a mere backdrop for what really caught her attention. Dragons. What seemed like hundreds of them. Huge, dark, mean-looking dragons with snapping teeth and whiplash tails. Every one of them was the size of a small plane and they came in monochrome shades ranging from pale gray to blue-black.

She hugged the treeline, not taking her eyes off the action at the shallows of the lake. There were half-naked men in the water with the dragons, scrubbing them down and washing their wings but it didn’t seem to stop the dragons snapping and snarling at each other at random intervals.

A man separated himself from the group, wading out of the water and jogging in her direction. The moment she realized it was Tarkan, she was so grateful to see a familiar face she didn’t quite register the fact that he was almost naked. But as he got closer the sun glistened off his wet, copper-colored skin and she realized his tiny black shorts did nothing to hide the glory of his body.

My god, he’s perfect. Broad shoulders, deep chest, ten-pack abs and huge arms and legs. He had no hair on his body and every muscle was so clearly delineated he could have posed for an anatomy poster. His blue hair was slicked close to his head and threw his extraordinary facial features into sharp relief.
He drew to a halt a mere half step from her, his cognac-brown eyes sparkling.

Tarkan took a deep breath and his voice rumbled out, low and sexy. “You came. I wondered if you would.”

She tried to keep her eyes on his face, truly she did but she was a chest and shoulder girl from way back. His naked torso was making it hard to concentrate. “I would have come sooner,” she said. “But they kept a really close eye on us. I had to sneak out of the dormatory.”

“No matter. You’re here now.” He closed the distance between them, near enough that her breasts almost brushed his damp body. Leaning down he whispered in her ear. “Have you come to ask for my help?”

Her whole body jerked and for a moment she thought she was having a seizure, then her nipples hardened and her core throbbed and she realized what the sensation was. Lust. Pure and not simple, and certainly not welcome. She kept her gaze fixed on the drool-worthy expanse of his pecs and fisted her hands in her skirts, gripping on for dear life. “Yes, I’ve come to you for help.”

He lifted a large, warm hand to rest on the side of her waist, not gripping her, just resting it there. It felt like a brand, searing her skin through three layers of cloth and all her sensible intentions. Then his hand slid a little lower, his thumb lightly pressing against her hipbone. “Are you willing to pay the price, Chelsea?”

About DJ Michaels:

Books have always been my refuge, a bit (okay, a lot) like an adult cubbyhouse. When real life gets too much—or too little—I can delve into my library and be utterly transported to places familiar and exotic. I can also meet the kind of people I’d never come across in my normal life, which is not always a bad thing.
These days not only do I get to visit other writers’ worlds, but I get to create my own—worlds chock full of sexy warrior men; strong, capable women; and oh yes, let’s not forget the dragons. My cubbyhouse is very cool, the door is always open for visitors, and new friends are most welcome.

Magic Thursday ~ TAINTED ~ Enemies to Lovers + Giveaway!

Four years ago a tough Roman centurion marched into my mind and heart and took over my muse (not that I heard her complaining too hard...) He was searching for his Druid princess and that story became my first published full length book, Forbidden.

Today I'm delighted that the fourth book set in my mystical Roman/Druid world, Tainted, has been released. In the first three books the heroines were natives of Cymru, fighting against the Roman invaders (and losing their hearts to them too!) In Tainted I mixed things up a bit, and the heroine, Antonia, is a Roman with patrician blood in her veins. And she falls for a man determined to eliminate all trace of the Eagle from his beloved land.

To celebrate the release of Tainted I'm participating in a fabulous Cover Reveal Blog Tour. Enter the contest below to be in with the chance of winning the Grand Prize :-)

        Blurb

A dangerous love that Rome will never allow…

Driven by the knowledge he failed to protect his king and embittered at losing the woman he loves, Celtic warrior Gawain despises the lust he feels for the beautiful Roman patrician, Antonia. She is everything he’s never wanted in a woman, yet she ignites his passion like no other. Despite the danger of discovery he embarks on an illicit liaison with her, determined to uncover the reason for the infinite sorrow that haunts her eyes.

Newly arrived in Britannia from Rome, Antonia is inexplicably drawn to the cold, tough Celt whose touch stirs a desire she long thought died at the hands of her brutal former husband. With Gawain she learns the pleasure of sex and his unexpected tenderness thaws her frozen heart. But she hides a deadly secret that could be her undoing, and knows her growing feelings for him can lead nowhere. Yet when a shadow from her past threatens her future Antonia is torn between the Empire of her birth and betraying Gawain, the man she’s grown to love.

Inside Scoop: This medieval romance dabbles a wee bit in the paranormal.

Bio

Christina loves writing dark tales of tough, sexy warriors who are brought to their knees by their heroines. A mystical touch of fantasy or paranormal usually weaves its way through her stories, although strangely enough this wasn’t her intention when she first starting writing her Roman/Druid romances. But when ancient gods and goddesses get involved, it’s best just to go with the flow :-)

She is published by Ellora’s Cave and Berkley Heat and has dipped her toe in the indie pub waters. She is a member of the Romance Writers of Australia, Romance Writers of America, the DarkSide Down Under Group Blog and Historical Hearts Group Blog.

Christina is an ex-pat Brit who now lives in sunny Western Australia with her family. She is also owned by three gorgeous cats who are convinced the universe revolves around their needs. They are not wrong.

Magic Thursday - Goddess of the Moon + Giveaway

I’ve always loved myths and legends and ancient gods and goddesses. One of the aspects that I love about my Roman/Druid books set during the 1st century in Britain is the mysticism that surrounds the Druid peoples. This was a time when gods and goddesses were integral to every day life—but the thing that really captures my imagination is the goddess culture.

The heroine of BETRAYED (released yesterday from Ellora’s Cave!) is Nimue. She appeared right at the end of book #3, CAPTIVE, and was an acolyte of the Moon Goddess Arianrhod. I knew next to nothing about Arianrhod at that point but when Nimue wouldn’t leave my mind because her story had to be told, I knew I was going to have to do some research.

Legend has it that Arianrhod’s uncle, the magician King Math, was required to keep his feet in the lap of a maiden whenever he wasn’t at war, in order to retain his sovereignty and power. When Arianrhod and her brother-god Gwydion’s younger brother fell in love with her Gwydion, God of Illusion, manufactured a war which entailed Math leaving his domain.

The younger brother immediately took advantage and raped the maiden. How is this love? But I digress...

Upon Math’s return, and learning that his maiden could no longer perform her duty, he married her and then punished his two nephews. His punishments involved turning them into a mated pair of deer for a year, then a mated pair of wild hogs and finally a pair of mated wolves. At the end of each year the brothers produced one offspring (I’m not going there! )

Finally the punishment ended but Math still required a maiden as his footholder. Gwydion suggested his sister, Arianrhod. She was brought to court and had to step over a magical wand to prove her virginity. As she did so she gave birth to twin boys, one who slipped into the sea and swam away and the other was taken by Gwydion who raised him as his own.

Arianrhod was humiliated and shamed before the whole court, forsaken by her brother Gwydion and later thwarted by her son. She retreated to her castle and later drowned.

Unimpressed by that ending that appears to punish a woman for not conforming to a certain patriarchal worldview, I dug deeper.

Arianrhod’s name means “starry wheel” and her palace, or castle, was the Aurora Borealis. She is one of the Triple Goddesses, a Moon Goddess associated with reincarnation and is connected to the womb, death, rebirth and creation. She is a weaver of the fates and could shapeshift into an owl—symbolic of wisdom.

In short, Arianrhod was a powerful goddess in her own right and would have been a strong, independent woman and a primal figure of feminine power.

Too powerful, perhaps, for a patriarchal society to accept?

I’d found the hook I’d been looking for. Nimue is strong, independent and doesn’t need a man to protect her. But when she’s captured by Tacitus, a Roman Tribune, her world is turned upside down and she and Arianrhod’s fates become inextricably entwined.

Betrayed

In 51 A.D., Druid priestess Nimue is injured and enslaved by the hated Roman Legions. Even though she is drawn to her captor, she’s determined to escape and complete her mission for the Briton king and her duty to Arianrhod, the goddess she is bound to.

The tough Roman warrior who captures her is far from the brutal barbarian she expects. His touch inflames her desires and passion burns between them. Though Nimue does not accept her enslavement, her heart surrenders to her enemy. When Arianrhod appears to her in the form of an owl, Nimue knows the union is blessed.

Roman warrior Tacitus is enchanted by the fiery beauty who shows no fear and challenges him at every turn. Though enslaving her goes against his heart, he’s determined to make her his. No woman has ever heated his blood as she does. But when he discovers her true nature as one who actually communes with the gods, his loyalties are torn between his heritage and a woman who could destroy everything he’s ever believed in.

I have an e-copy of Betrayed to giveaway to one lucky commenter on this post. Just leave a comment or let me know if you had the power of shapeshifting, what would you love to shapeshift into? (Personally I’d like to shapeshift into the smexy woman in Clive Owen or Henry Cavill’s arms. Just saying…)

The Mabinogion, translated by Lady Charlotte Guest. Welsh legends collected in the Red Book of Hergest, a manuscript which is in the library of Oxford University.

Arianrhod’s legend is in the Fourth Branch, Math, the Son of Mathonwy
