Magic Thursday: Contacting Long Dead Ancestors with Cathleen Ross!

When I went on Alison Weir’s 2026 trip to Wales, I decided I was going to keep my psychic abilities shut down unless I deemed it safe to open up. Usually churches and monasteries are good places. When visiting St Mary’s priory church in Abergavenny, I came across the beautiful tomb of my 26th great grandmother, Eva de Braose 1203-1246. On the tomb is an effigy of a woman holding a heart. I was told that only Eva’s heart was buried there. Apparently, this is a medieval custom whereby the body is carved up and buried in different ancestral places. I thought this is safe, I’ll introduce myself to Eva as one of her granddaughters.

I’ve researched the de Braose family history as some of it is horrific. I knew King John Plantagenet had locked up Matilda de Braose with her son and starved them to death. In desperation poor Matilda had bitten her son’s cheek. Even for the treacherous time she lived, the aristocracy was horrified. Matilda’s mistake was to mention within King John’s official’s hearing that she wouldn’t trust the king with one of her sons.

John had previously ordered his nephew’s eyes plucked out, so Matilda had good reason. Unfortunately for her, John became intent on destroying her and her eldest son. It’s was Matilda’s terrible death that inspired clause 39 of the Magna Carta that no man or woman should be imprisoned without trial.

So bearing this in mind, I put my hand on the stone heart of the effigy and introduced myself. I immediately felt the energy run hot up my arm and go straight to my heart. I told Eva that I was so sorry about her mother, Matilda. Immediately I felt her whole soul tremble. No words came. Only desperate shuddering fear. I felt terrible. I apologised and withdrew my hand breaking the connection.

For some time, I wondered why Eva was so frightened.

When I went back to my hotel, I had data and rechecked my ancestry. Eva’s mother was Isabel de Clare, the daughter of William Marshall, the greatest knight that ever lived. I had my history wrong. Matilda was her great grandmother.

That is not the say that Eva hadn’t been born to trauma. Her father had been caught in bed with Joan, the Lady of Wales, Llewelyn the Great’s wife. Llewelyn had him hanged, so poor Eva had lost her father.

Eva de Braose

I’d tapped into the soul of a grandmother from an ill-fated family and frightened her. It wasn’t a proud moment for me. I sent many prayers and apologies to Eva, the grandmother I should have left undisturbed. The grandmother who wasn’t pleased to hear from me unlike others I have contacted.
