It’s near impossible to be creative when your well is empty. Yet, it’s so easy to forget about taking care of yourself and ending up burned out.
Toward the end of 2019 I hit burnout hard. I’d said “yes” way too much and over extended myself with attending overseas events and writing for anthologies/multi author worlds. I planned to overcome this with a two week holiday at a friend’s place in California where I could relax and refill my well with my author buddy.
But then Covid happened.
Instead of my peaceful R’n’R holiday, I was locked down at home with the kids and hubby. I still had writing deadlines, and I missed every single one of them because with the added stresses Covid brought, I couldn’t be creative. The characters and stories just wouldn’t play ball. Which then stressed me out even more.
Was my muse gone forever?
When I was invited to go to Hawaii for a week long writers’ retreat earlier this year, I was instantly “sign me up” because nearly three years later, I was STILL burned out and struggling to get words onto a page.
The BLC Writers’ Retreat happened last month and it was exactly what I needed. There were 12 authors that went, and we were an even mix of trad, hybrid and indie published. We were also a good mix of where in our careers we were. There was LOTS of time spent relaxing around the pool (having a few drinks) or exploring the island, and every afternoon we had an ‘author chat’ where we got to discuss all sorts of things to do with author life (and some things nothing to do with author life 😉). A lot of us also got up before dawn most mornings to go to the beach to watch the sun rise. It was an amazing week and at the end I felt so refreshed and ready to write it was amazing!
Of course, I then flew over to New York to do a signing where I ran around like an idiot for five days before coming home. And I had another signing just days after I arrived home, so that was fun with jetlag. But even with all that racing around, I still feel better with my creative battery fully charged and I’m writing again! My mind is racing with stories and several of my characters are talking to me again.
So, to all my author friends, and other creatives, remember to keep your well full. Self care is important and we need to remember to schedule that sucker into our lives so we don’t forget and overwork ourselves.
Much love, and keep writing!
