Magic Thursday: Letting Go… of a series with Cassie Laelyn!

In 2019, I was a wide-eyed and bushy-tailed debut author releasing her first book into the wild. A book that had simmered in my head for about five years and then took another year or two to write. At the time, I naively thought I’d write a three-book series about a brotherhood of not-so-angelic angels banished to the mortal realm by Fate, and see what happens. Oops! Not long after that first book hit the shelves, I realised I’d found a passion.

Being a pantser (though, nowadays I sit somewhere between a plotter and pantser!), I started writing my first book with a rough outline of the world, some rules and beliefs (which have written me into a plot hole plenty of times!), and four rough-around-the-edges, tortured heroes. Figuring out what happened in subsequent books was future Cassie’s problem, as I furiously typed away at that first draft. Almost seven years later, with six books published in the Fallen Guardian series, that original world became so much bigger than I ever could’ve imagined. Plus, along the way, side-characters who readers fell hard for (ahem *Cole*) demanded their own story! I probably should have expected that. *forehead slap*

What happened to writing only three books, huh?

Some might think having more books in a series is fantastic, especially when readers devour them. But last year I felt the end. Felt that the series had run its course, and I wanted to wrap it up while it still sparked joy. Although that quickly morphed into a sinking feeling of “what happens when I reach the end”? What happens when I sit down to write that final book and say goodbye to a world that’s been a part of my life for over a decade?

Of course, that led to a freak out where I avoided thinking about that last book and instead, wrote a different one! The thing about avoidance, though, is we can’t do it forever.

Before I even wrote the first line of book one (“Fate was a bitch.”), I knew the series arc would be about a brotherhood of Guardians on a mission to save one of their own. A Fallen brother. A comrade who’d paid the ultimate price (or made the ultimate sacrifice?). And I wanted readers to battle about whether the Guardians should save him. The last thing I expected was for them to fall for this winged dude and constantly ask for his book.

Excuse me. The pressure!

Suddenly, I wasn’t only writing for fun. I wasn’t toying with made-up stories and characters in my head. There were real readers with feelings and expectations! It became a little overwhelming and made me question everything. Will I be able to give this Fallen the story he deserves? Eeek! Will I be able to close all the plot lines my pantsing brain wrote during the past six books? Double eeek!

Will I be able to let these characters go? ….

That one hit hard. Because when I sat down to really figure out why I was so reluctant to write Blaine’s book, I discovered it wasn’t the pressure from readers holding me back. At the heart, it was the grief at saying goodbye to characters that had been with me for so long. This series was my first. Like a first love, it holds a special place in my heart. The series that showed me I could do it. I could be an author, when for most of my life, everyone had told me writing was a hobby, not a career. This series showed me it was okay to have dreams, and it was even more okay to chase them.

This series gave me hope.

Which is the underlying theme in all our stories. Hope. Hope that friends and family are forever. That good will conquer evil. Hope that love will prevail. Because at the end of the day, isn’t that why we love reading romance? It feeds us hope and joy when the world around us falls apart.

But remember when I said we can’t avoid something forever? Now I’m there. Reaching for my blank notebook. This time though, I’m reminding myself that The Fallen Guardians won’t be the only series that sets my soul on fire. It is the series that paved the way for every book I’ll write in the future.

That makes the pressure a little lighter.

Now, I’m putting on my big girl pants and sitting my butt in the chair to enter that world for the last time. To write that book. The one that will tie all those pretty plots together in a lovely glossy, black bow and give our misunderstood Fallen the redemption he deserves.

While I’m at it, I’m also remembering that this story isn’t only closure for my readers. It’s for me, too.

Magic Thursday: Beyond the Page - Bringing Stories to Life Outside the Book with HM Hodgson

Magic Thursday: Beyond the Page - Bringing Stories to Life Outside the Book ; May 2026

“Vella slid into Councillor Matthias Medea’s bedroom suite and, with delectable hints of sandalwood and spice warming the air, hit the timer on her watch.” - Opening line from Wrath: Witch Wars

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a perfume would exist based on a book character I had written, and yet today, there are two! Meet Vella and Matthias, scents hand-crafted by Aura and Alchemy and bottled for an olfactory reader experience. And the icing on the cake (or the stopper on the perfume bottle) … I make a few dollars too.

So today I wanted to talk about some of the ways authors can collaborate with bookish vendors to leverage our stories for increased reader engagement and profit.

Image 1. Vella and Matthias perfumes

Before going much further, I should say that I love reader events – meeting readers and selling books is both a thrill and a privilege, and over the past three years, one thing has become increasingly clear: readers love to experience their favorite characters and tropes and worlds beyond just the story on the page, and bookish vendors that deliver on this experience are thriving.

These bookish vendors create the perfect space for our book worlds to meet commercial worlds, and in the overlap, wonder and opportunity is created … watching a reader’s eyes light up when they see a beloved character depicted by artists like Ashley Nobes, or inhaling the scent of Ink-Stained Soul by Aura and Alchemy (black currant, leather, caramel, sandalwood and plum) or wearing their fave shirt from Lit Lines, has been proof of that for me. And an exciting part of the rise in bookish vendors is the opportunity created for authors.

Image 2A: Aura & Alchemy Bookish biz logos and pic

Image 2B: Painted Chapters: Bookish biz logos and pic

Some bookish vendors collaborate with authors at profit to the author, like when Aura and Alchemy featured the Vella and Matthias perfumes in their monthly perfume box (I now also buy these perfumes at wholesale from Aura and Alchemy and sell them to readers).

However, many bookish vendors also charge a fee (which I’ll happily pay), like Ashley Nobes Art or Painted Chapters (both who have, and are, creating character art for my books). Character art is great for deepening reader engagement, as well as commercially (where you have the commercial rights – always check each artists’ contract as they differ) such as including the art inside the books as endpapers and printing the art onto merchandise that you can sell. Hello, Matthias!

Image 3. Matthias cushion

PR book boxes are another way to bring our books to life. Last year I paid for a PR box through Haus of Fables (currently closed to submission but will hopefully reopen later in the year). Their curated book box helped get my book out into the world, and working with them showed me how you can reframe a concept or an item from your story in a commercial way: in Wrath, there’s a rumor that the main character has a magical peen, so to show this physically, we added mini crystal peens to every PR box.

Image 4. Haus of Fables PR box

Talking about PR boxes, at a book launch for ML Jewell’s, Revenge of the Witches, I won the lucky door prize which was Mel’s release PR box, and the goodies included are an excellent example of taking your story and selling it beyond the page … a plush toy based on Winnie from the book, character art, a beautiful map, even a tissue box wrapped in the book cover (because you will cry in this book!)

Image 5. ML Jewell’s book box

Then there are the events that invite readers to escape (sometimes for a lunch, sometimes for an entire weekend) into their bookish world. I’m taking part in a She Journeys weekend retreat in July called Fireheart in the Gold Coast hinterland along with fellow author Demi Clorissa, where readers get to immerse themselves in a fantasy world, with a build-your-own-court workshop, treasure hunt, potion making, fancy dress dinner plus a book signing.

Image 6. She Journeys

So what have I learned from all this? That applying a commercial lens to my stories (but this is essential: the lens must fit the world and the characters) creates opportunities for the future. Now all my MCs have their own scent. Their hairstyles and clothing are detailed on the page in a way that supports stunning character art. They’ve got familiars that can be turned into plush toys. They wear jewelry perfect for adding into book boxes and they absolutely have magical appendages!

"Emery

There was a dead person on the couch. Or maybe he was drunk. Either way, he wasn't moving, and I had about thirteen minutes to dispose of the body before the first contractor arrived.

How the hell did one hide a body that size?

I crept closer to check for signs of life, but not too close that if he wasn't dead, he'd suddenly wake with me leaning over his pretty face. He was pretty. All dark and dangerous, with midnight black hair flopping in front of his closed eyes, a sharp, freshly shaven jaw, and a bare chest covered in an intricate masterpiece of woven swirls and jagged lines. Don't even get me started on the muscles. Even in death, the guy rocked a defined six pack and that glorious 'v' shape heading beneath his black sweatpants.
He was too dreamy to die."

RINGING.

An insistent, continuous, ringing dragged Dev from a brain-dead sleep. Stifling a groan, he reached across and thumped the alarm clock. The sound continued. Shaking off the groggy confusion, he dragged himself out of bed, as the cacophony appeared to be someone leaning on the doorbell.

Dev barrelled down the stairs, almost succumbing to a broken neck when an impatient Siamese wound herself between his feet.

'Hang on, Carmen. I'll feed you in a sec.'

The Sinner and the Priest
Book 3, Sinner Sisterhood

Expected Release:
28 April

A week ago, I was an exorcist with ironclad vows. Now...

I confess to Almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts… especially in thoughts involving my Roman collar, a certain red-headed Sinner’s wrists, and the desk in my church’s oratory.

I spent years in prison trying to starve the violence and hunger in my cursed blood. Instead, I found it purring when the sisterhood’s deadliest seductress entered my confessional and whispered her litany of filth.

I have lied to my superiors. I have sworn to dismantle this heretical organization, while secretly burning every bridge back to Rome to keep her safe.

I am the shepherd who was too busy counting freckles on her bare shoulder to hear the screaming of my flock.

Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault... I told Mercy I was not her prophesied, fated Saint. But when her sister dared to threaten her life…

I forgot that I am Father Francisco Angelotti, the former mafia enforcer, whose vows are a muzzle to keep the world safe from his teeth. I forgot that I should have been hunting the Third Horseman, Famine, and his demons in my flock’s garden.

And I forgot that I was the wolf who taught them how to eat.

If you enjoy stories about irreverent bad girls corrupting the good boys, heartbreaking slow burn smut with all the feels, complex characters with tragic backstories, compelling plot, hilarious banter, suspense, and action, then this is for you.

Every instinct screams that something very sinister is happening here and when news breaks that another young woman is missing, her pulse races once again. Jenna knows she’s running out of time to find the girl before she too ends up in a woodland grave.

Jenna and her team work night and day, ignoring the growing threat from the farm workers around them, and soon discover a link between the ranch and an unsolved case where two people were burned alive in a remote cabin. Could a twisted killer have been using this place as a hunting ground for over a decade?

When a call comes in about suspicious activity at an off-the-grid hut in the nearby forest, Jenna knows this is the breakthrough they need. Scrambling her team, she prays that she can catch this ruthless killer before he takes another innocent life. But what waits for her beneath the trees is more terrifying than anything she imagined. Can she find the missing girl and save herself from becoming the monster’s next victim?
