TikTok. It seems as if every author, socially adept and averse alike, is compelled to check it out. It is undeniable that TikTok can help with sales, but what happens if you’re naturally repelled by social media? Can you leverage TikTok to support your upcoming release without spending days building up a following?
Sure you can! If you’re open to sending out advanced copies of your next book, you can always reach out to BookTokers (TikTok creators who specifically create bookish content) who already have a decent following to request support for your next launch.
Before I published my debut, Little Fire, (admittedly after much encouragement from my editor) I searched on TikTok using the hashtags relevant to my subgenre. In my case, I searched for #fantasyromance #romantasybooks #faebooks (you get the idea) and watch the highest performing TikToks under those hashtags. If I found an account that struck my fancy, I checked their profile (to see if I’m comfortable with their number of followers) and watch more videos from that creator (to see if I’m comfortable with their persona and the way they review books).
If they are open to receiving ARCs or PR boxes from authors, they usually have an email listed. I would suggest writing an introductory email and pitching your book. Now if the word ‘pitch’ sends a chill down your spine…calm down. All I did was say something along the lines of “I saw that you enjoyed X book, and I believe you would also enjoy mine.” Include a professional book cover, a polished blurb and indicate if you’re willing to send them a physical copy or a digital one.
Do not assume that all booktokers prefer physical copies. Some are perfectly content with digital ones! Also, mailing a book halfway across the globe can wrack up costs pretty quickly. An alternative to AusPost is to send direct from Amazon.
Lastly, it’s important to note that not every BookToker will respond to cold emails, but you’ll be surprised how many do respond.
You never know if you don’t try…Good luck! 😊

Blood Song
She owes her blood. He’ll pay with his life.

She may be voiceless, but she speaks to his soul, and giving her up may be a cost too steep to bear.

He’s a cutthroat bent on using her, yet working with him may be the only way to survive…
He demands her blood, but she can’t deny the way he calls to her body, or the danger he poses to her heart.

Hollee Mands
Hollee Mands used to be that kid who sat at the back of the class, scribbling stories and doodling in dreary math workbooks. Much older and still unrepentant, she’s now determined to bring her imaginations to life through the keyboard. When she isn’t squirrelling away time to write, read, or sketch, she is a communications consultant, wife, and proud mom to a tiny dictator who has the speech patterns (and physical energy) to rival a steam train.
She currently resides in fickle-weathered Melbourne and is a proud member of Romance Writers Australia.
